This location is situated near to the bay of Mont Saint Michel. The Mont-Saint-Michel Bay (Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel) is located between Brittany (to the southwest) and the Normandy peninsula of Cotentin (to the south and east). The bay was listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979 for its aesthetic quality. Due to the significant tidal movements in this region (over 10 meters) a large part of the bay is uncovered at low tide. There are two granite islands in the bay: Tombelaine and the the famous Mont-Saint-Michel which is consistently one of France's most popular cultural landmarks, frequently cited as the 2nd or 3rd most visited tourist site in the country outside of Paris.
