CREUSE. 12th century Medieval Defence Chateau within 3.7 hectares of parkland plus a second house and various other buildings within the grounds.

Situated in an elevated position with 360°views over the countryside sits this magnificent 12th century medieval castle set in 3.7 hectares of parkland.

Dating from circa. 1174 it is one of the oldest medieval castles in the Limousin with 844 years of vast epic history.
Originally built as a hilltop defence castle by the Knights Templar, the castle still retains its original walled battlements, dungeons and escape tunnel.
The south defence turret of the tower is carved with the royal crest "Fleur de Lys" to mark the french members of the royal family that resided at the castle over the centuries.
The castle was also owned by "The Sun King" King Louis XIV who gave the castle to his royal mistress as a love token for baring him two children and inspiring the creation of Versailles.

The approach to the château is a long tree lined avenue planted in commemoration of the coronation of King Louis XIV, which is archived as "The Great Road". The château was constructed over an enormous vaulted cellar with the castle kitchen, and the beautiful original medieval granite staircase running throughout, forming the centre-piece of the château.

The main entrance to the chateau is from the west terrace, on the ground floor there are three very large reception rooms and a large dining room, all with many original period features such as beamed ceilings, ornate fireplaces, doors from each reception room leading to the southern veranda, a study with an ornate ceiling in the tower, and a separate 17th century spiral staircase which was commissioned by the Marquis for the servants.

On the first floor there are currently eight bedrooms with bathrooms, although the rooms on this floor have been created with relatively recent partitions to provide maximum sleeping space when the château was previously run commercially. There is capacity for the floor to be remodeled if required.

On the second floor is a fully renovated self-contained 3 bedroom apartment with living/dining room, kitchen and bathroom. There are 3 further bedrooms which require finishing on this floor.

Situated within the château's parkland is a detached fully renovated, 2 bedroom house. This house is being offered fully furnished, is fully insulated and provides heating from the cosy wood-burner and supplemented by electric radiators.

Set within the grounds there is also a detached 14 bedroom coach/carriage house on three levels which needs modernising internally, a small detached chapel, large indoor menage, barn and stables.

Substantial restoration work to the chateau has been carried out over the past few years, there are remaining rooms to be completed.
Recently the electric throughout the chateau have been replaced.
The chateau is heated by oil central heating.
